A volcano erupting with smoke at sunset.

THE SCORCHED WASTES

Forged by the ever-present volcano that towers over the region, the Scorched Wastes are a land of striking contrasts. The landscape nearest the peak is a harsh expanse of black volcanic rock, ash, and hardened lava, where only the hardiest plants can survive beneath the heat and drifting smoke. Farther from the mountain, the land gradually gives way to rolling grasslands, scattered groves, and, eventually, dense forests nourished by ancient volcanic soil.

VILLAGE LIFE

EMBERHOLD

Emberhold rises where the black slopes of a restless volcano give way to fertile fields and distant woodlands, a village built not despite the mountain, but because of it. Fine ash drifts through the air, settling softly across weathered rooftops and streets of volcanic stone. Warm winds carry the mountain's steady breath through every corner of the village, while smoke curls above its summit on most days, a quiet reminder that the land is alive and that balance still holds. Rather than fearing the volcano, the people of Emberhold have learned to live in harmony with it, drawing warmth and purpose from its enduring presence.

Walk through Emberhold's streets, and the village comes alive around you. The rhythmic clang of hammers rings from the forges, wagon wheels rumble across worn stone, and the scent of fresh bread, roasted grain, sweet cinderberries, and wood smoke drifts on the warm air. At the heart of it all lies Firelight Square, where merchants greet familiar faces beneath colorful awnings, children dart between market stalls, and neighbors pause to exchange stories before returning to their work. The cheerful calls of coppersongs echo overhead while, somewhere nearby, the gentle hiss of a Steam Well rises above the bustle as attendants draw mineral-rich water from the heated depths below to supply homes, workshops, and taverns throughout the village.

Beyond the village proper, the Warmfields stretch across the surrounding countryside, where volcanic soil produces abundant harvests of stonebarley, pyrestalk, dryvine beans, and other hardy crops. Smoke steers graze peacefully beside slaghogs wallowing in steaming mineral pools. These fields provide Emberhold with food, livestock, and valuable trade goods that sustain not only the village but communities throughout Aeloria. Even the meals reflect the land, from hearty stews and dense stonebarley loaves to glowcider, ironroot ale, and the bold bite of saltwake brew enjoyed in welcoming taverns such as The Smoldering Tankard and Hearth & Ladle.

LUMINARA

Each year, Emberhold celebrates Luminara, a festival honoring the resilience of its people after surviving the first great eruption.

The celebration commemorates the return of light at dawn, the endurance of those who stood together through the mountain’s fury, and the Fire Guardian who bore the inferno to preserve the balance.

More than a festival, Luminara is a remembrance that even in the darkest hours, hope, sacrifice, and steadfast resolve endure.

Built with the same care as Emberhall, the Hearthvault preserves the village’s records and scrolls within carefully maintained stone chambers, where light and placement are controlled to protect history from time and decay.

The Natural World

Although the Scorched Wastes are known for volcanic stone and open grasslands, Emberhold is home to several remarkable tree species.

Most beloved is the ambershade tree, whose branches extend toward nearby people, unfurling fresh leaves with a soft, crystalline chiming until those beneath them are shaded. When no longer needed, the leaves withdraw and the branches return to their natural form. Carefully tended for generations, these remarkable trees have become one of Emberhold's most cherished features.

Another prominent species is the warmbark oak, a towering tree prized for its exceptionally strong, heat-resistant timber. Its dense wood is used throughout Emberhold for roof beams, structural supports, and other critical construction, valued for its ability to endure both the region's volcanic warmth and the frequent tremors that ripple through the village.

Standing in Founders Green, the ancient Founders Tree was planted by Emberhold's earliest settlers and remains a living symbol of the village. Its broad branches have sheltered generations who gathered beneath its canopy to rest, celebrate, and remember Emberhold's beginnings.

Despite its rugged setting, Emberhold is softened by carefully tended greenery. Sunveil hedges line streets, homes, and gardens, their branches heavy with pale blossoms that perfume the morning air with a sweet fragrance. These hardy shrubs thrive in the mineral-rich ground warmed by the volcano, requiring little care once established, and have become as much a part of the village's identity as its buildings and brick streets.

Much of Emberhold's flora serves a practical purpose beyond its beauty. Cinderberry bushes produce the fruit used in the village's beloved cinderberry rolls, while conesage, a hardy aromatic herb, flavors stews, roasted meats, breads, and broths throughout the year.

Stoneward Healers cultivate whitelace, whose delicate white blossoms and finely divided leaves are prepared into poultices and teas to treat wounds, swelling, and fevers, alongside prinella, a cheerful white flower with golden centers valued for soothing burns, irritated skin, and digestive ailments.

Together, these carefully tended gardens reflect Emberhold's enduring belief that the most valuable plants nourish both body and spirit.

HEARTH AND TABLE

The cuisine of Emberhold reflects the land that sustains it: hearty, practical, and built to endure. Every meal is designed to provide lasting nourishment for those who spend their days in the Scorchyard, the Warmfields, and working in the shops. Dense stonebarley breads, roasted roots, smoked meats, and rich dairy form the foundation of nearly every table, while slow cooking over banked heat draws deep flavors from simple ingredients. Food is valued not for extravagance, but for its ability to strengthen the body and bring families together after long days of labor.

The fertile volcanic ground surrounding Emberhold produces a surprising abundance despite the harsh landscape. Stonebarley remains the region's most important crop, appearing in everything from porridge and griddle cakes to hearty loaves and biscuits. Smokeroot, groundspuds, dryvine beans, and heat-onions provide dependable harvests throughout the year. Fruits such as charfruit, cinderberries, redstem, glowplums, and crimson drops bring sweetness to breads, preserves, desserts, and festival dishes. Livestock, including smoke steers, emberhogs, kilnfowl, thorn stag, and redbeards, supply meat, milk, cheese, and rendered fats, creating a cuisine that is both sustaining and deeply satisfying.

Though most meals are humble, Emberhold's cooks take quiet pride in balancing rich, smoky flavors with the natural sweetness of the region's fruits and the occasional imported spice from neighboring realms. Rich smoke steer milk accompanies everyday meals, ironroot ale is the favored tavern drink after a day's work, and the bitter saltwake brew is prized for its steadying focus, while Hearth & Ladle's famed glowcider is crafted only once each year for the Luminara celebration. Shared stews, roasted meats, fresh breads, and warm desserts gather families and friends around the hearth, reminding the people of Emberhold that even in a land shaped by fire, good food and drink are among life's greatest comforts.
